FDA-Approved Medtronic Device for Pain Management
FDA-Approved Medtronic Device for Pain Management
Published: February 15, 2022
Medtronic, a global healthcare technology company, announced that it has received earlier-than-expected FDA approval for spinal cord stimulation therapy to treat pain as a result of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). This premarket approval aligns Medtronic to be in direct competition with Nevro, another medical device company developing spinal cord stimulators. There are an estimated 800,000 patients in the United States who suffer from moderate to severe symptoms of DPM whose symptoms are not reduced through traditional approaches like medication. The spinal cord stimulator business is a $1.8 billion dollar industry.
Medtronic Neurostimulators for DPN
Medtronic’s Intellis rechargeable neurostimulator and Vanta recharge-free neurostimulator for diabetic peripheral neuropathy have secured premarket approval based on existing clinical data and real-world evidence. It is said that this approval is “likely to have a positive impact on treatment awareness and bolster overall market development,” especially given Medtronic’s extensive Diabetes salesforce and knowledge.
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a progressive neurological disorder that affects close to 30% of people with diabetes. It can have consequential impacts on quality of life and functionality – including mood, social relationships, and even sleep. DPN happens when high blood sugar damages nerves in the body, frequently legs and feet, and creates numbness, tingling, or burning sensations. The pain can become worse and worse.
